Essex is facing the prospect of running out of space for waste in the next 10 years, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p11).

The present landfill sites will be used up by then, and the county is trying now, in a £50,000 project launched yesterday, to find a solution to deal with the 750,000 tons of waste arriving at the sites every year.

David Tuthill, Essex CC waste manager, said that three incinerators are likely to be built in the county to deal with the backlog, although no sites have been identified.

'But we will always have to have landfill sites as well, in one form or another,' he told the paper.
