The chairman of Essex CC social services committee has dismissed a Social Services Inspectorate report into the county as a 'political sop', reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p9).

Cllr Mervyn Juliff said yesterday the SSI investigation, which was prompted by local MPs and three care home associations, was 'totally unnecessary', and its report was put together as a political sop to the Conservative MPs.

The SSI report, given to the council two weeks ago, said Essex needed to use the private sector more and review its own more expensive services.

It also said adequate financial monitoring needed to be established to better balance resources with demand.
