Essex CC has asked education secretary Gillian Shephard to declare a Tendring school's ballot for opting-out invalid, the East Anglian Daily Times reports (p1).

Education director Paul Lincoln cited six examples of alleged 'misleading' information that was sent out in newsletters to parents, including claims that staff had voted six to one in favour of opting out, and the school would get money if it became grant-maintained.

But the chairwoman of the governors, Linda Guglielmi, stands by the content of the newsletters, the East Anglian Daily Times reports, adding:

'We are the only remaining senior school in Tendring not to be GM. We want to be on a level playing field.'
