Shenfield High comprehensive school in Brentwood, Essex is to segregate boys and girls in a bid to raise academic standards, the Independent reports (p8).

The paper says that staff at the school say recent GCSE league tables show pupils in single sex schools do better. From September 1994 first year pupils at the school will be separated although lunchtime and after-school clubs will still be mixed.

Shenfield is hoping to opt out of local authority control, says the Independent. The paper also reports on doubts in some quarters about whether single sex schools really do produce better results although it is known that girls do better at GCSE level.
