Essex CC social services have decided to pay private homes an average of £240 a week, £80 less than current rates, the East Anglian Daily Times reported (2 Sep, p9).

Committee chairman Mervyn Juliff says that the price ceiling has been imposed because of the assumption that private homes pay their staff lower than union rates, which the council pays in the staff in their homes.

But Essex Care and Homes Association spokesman David Holroyd said that the cuts will lead to 'a miserable and sparse existence' for some elderly and some 'vulnerable people having to be moved from home to home, rather like parcels.'
