Mervyn Juliff will lead Essex CC after Labour and the Liberal Democrats last night agreed a pact to run the authority for the next year.

The East Anglian Daily Times reports (p6) that despite Conservative gains on May 1, the combined forces of Labour and the Lib Dems give them a sizeable majority, according to Cllr Juliff, the Labour leader.

He said: 'There has been a lot of loose talk about the Tories regaining control of Essex CC. This is simply not true. The Labour-led administration - with the Lib Dems as our junior partners - will carry on.'

The paper reports that the Tories will have a notional working majority next April when the two new unitary authorities come into being.
