The proposal to stop free transport for pupils at eight Essex CC grammar schools may be withdrawn after protests by parents and children, reports The Times (p5).

The Labour and Liberal administration has been accused of conducting a vindictive campaign against grammar schools, but council leaders insist that they are merely looking at cost saving measures put forward by officials, says The Times.

A final decision will be taken next month.
