The Lib Dem/Lab coalition resigned in protest at the passing of a Conservative budget which limited council tax increases to 8.3%, 1.5% below the administration's preferred option (LGC, 25 February). The absence of a Labour member through illness allowed the Conservatives to prevail.
The Labour group has now accused Lord Hanningfield's Tories of not taking control because they knew the budget was unachievable. It said: 'They've been handed back control on a plate and they're not taking over. Why?'
