Six Yorkshire towns are to get a facelift with European Union investment,

BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this morning.

Barnsley MBC leader Stephen Houghton told the programme: 'A lot of European

money is coming into Yorkshire over the next seven years to regenerate

communities that have been devastated by pit closures and steelworks

Barnsley and other towns, including Doncaster and Halifax, have been advised

they need to be mnore Italian in style, Today reported.

'The people working with us have suggested there are lessons to be learnt

from the Italian experience', Mr Houghton said. 'We've been looking at using

the town centre... creating a whole new lifestyle from what we had before.

'If we don't make radical change, then the historic industrial decline will

continue. We've got to stop that'.
