Economic figures from the Office for National Statistics have confirmed that West Wales and the Valleys, Cornwall, South Yorkshire and Merseyside will qualify for European funds as Objective One areas.
The same figures reveal that the Highlands and Islands, a recipient of funding in the current six-year programme of grants, will lose out from 2000 because the area's GDP per head of population is slightly higher than the threshold stipulated under EU rules.
