An historic ruling was made yesterday at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, in a test case over the denial of job perks to same-sex partners. According to The Guardian (p6), the case has far-reaching implications for employment rights in Britain.

It could mean that employers will have to offer same-sex partners the same perks, including pension benefits, available to unmarried partners of the opposite sex. If the full court follows the opinion companies will have to look at all aspects of pay - salary, pensions, loans, mortgages and benefits - or risk claims against them.
