If the public are ever to trust the European Union local government must be actively involved, European Commission president Romano Prodi has warned
'[The] Nice [summit on EU enlargement] showed clearly how complex the union has become and how hard it is for people to understand. In opinion polls since Nice, people have said they distrust European institutions. This is a serious problem,' he said.
'If we are to regain strong public support for the European project, we must radically rethink the way we run Europe. We need a decentralised, open and democratic system of governance. Civil society and local government must be more closely and actively involved in shaping and monitoring European policies.'
Mr Prodi invited local government to contribute to the commission's white paper on new forms of governance.
