Columnist Simon Jenkins wrote in The Times (May 10, p22) that the proposal to establish an elected mayor in London could cause an upheaval in a corner of British democracy.

Mr Jenkins argued that other British cities would want elected mayors and that the extra level of politics at local government level would send shock waves around the democratic system.
