Former Birmingham city councillor Anthony Coombs has been appointed education and employment secretary Gillian Shephard's parliamentary private secretary.

Mr Coombs has been MP for Wyre Forest since 1987. He was a member of Birmingham City Council from 1978 to 1988, vice-chairman of the council's education committee 1982-84 and Conservative spokesman 1984-87.

He was secretary, then vice-chairman, of the Conservative back-bench committee 1987-90.

From 1978-92, Mr Coombs was chairman of governors at Perry Common School in Birmingham, and was a governor of the King Edward Foundation between 1982 and 1988.

Between 1989 and 1992 he was parliamentary private secretary to David Mellor when he was a minister of state at the Home Office; chief secretary to the treasury and then secretary of state for national heritage.
