The appointment today of recently retired Derbyshire CC chief executive John Raine as chairman of the Hearing Aid Council was announced by Nigel Griffiths, minister for competition and consumer affairs.

Mr Griffiths said:

'I am very pleased to be able to make this appointment which is

initially for three years. I believe that Mr Raine will be a persuasive and pro-active chairman who will enhance the reputation of

the Hearing Aid Council and champion the cause of hearing aid users.'

The HAC was set up under the Hearing Aid Council Act 1968. It has

statutory responsibility for securing adequate standards of

competence and conduct among persons engaged in dispensing hearing

aids in the private sector.

The post of chairman requires a commitment of a minimum of ten days

a year and is an unsalaried appointment. Mr Raine will succeed Mr

William Fernie who has been the chairman for six years.
