Former Hastings BC leader John Evans has appeared in court charged with theft from Marks & Spencer.

Reading crown court heard that Mr Evans planned to 'get even' with the company which he believed had blocked planning projects in Hastings, the Daily Mail reports (p33).

He stood down as prospective parliamentary candidate for Sherwood, Nottinghamshire, because of the case.

Mr Justice Hooper told Evans: 'This is a most unusual story. You served your community well and became heavily involved in Hastings, particularly its redevelopment.'
