Former Hull Labour lord mayor John Black is being investigated by the Humberside fraud squad over£42,000 he claimed from the mayor's remuneration fund in expenses during his 1995-96 year in office.

The police were alerted after a district auditor's report highlighted Mr Black's expenses. The figure is considerably higher than any previous office holder's.

Mr Black said: 'I am confident I have done nothing and will co-operate fully with any police inquiry. I hope the matter will be brought to a swift conclusion.'

Mr Black has resigned as chairman of Hull City Council housing committee while the investigation is under way.
