Merseyside Police could face action for damages in the wake of former Liverpool City Council deputy leader Derek Hatton's acquittal yesterday on theft and deception charges, reports the Daily Post, Liverpool (p1).

Yesterday Mr Hatton was cleared of stealing a horsebox and attempting to claim £45,000 insurance on the vehicle.

His solicitors are considering litigation against the force, the paper reports, although Mr Hatton has not committed himself to taking legal action.
