Almost 150 vacant ministry of defence properties were yesterday handed over to a Plymouth housing association, The Times reports (p9).

They had been empty for three years and the MoD released them after the start of legal action to force them to do so. The local council has 80 ex-service families in bed and breakfast accommodation.

Housing pressure group Empty Homes Agency says that 16,000 unoccupied government-owned homes are costing £175m a year in lost revenue and maintenance fees, The Times reports.
