Jim Brooks, leader of Monklands DC when it drew widespread allegation of sectarianism, corruption and nepotism, has been successful in libel action against three of his staunchest opponents, reported Scotland on Sunday (p6).

Cllr Brooks is set to receive around £5,000 to £10,000 damages, plus costs and an apology from the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser, its former reporter Eileen McAuley and local Conservative party chairman Gordon Lind.

The paper said that Labour leaders will be relieved the cases have been settled just days before damaging court hearings that would have involved senior party figures.

Most of the 15 ex-Monklands councillors, now members of the North Lanarkshire Council, have asked Labour to lift their suspensions from holding office.
