Excellence in five Scottish councils has been rewarded in Cosla's Excellence Awards 2002, which recognise outstanding quality of service to the public by councils across Scotland.

Renfrewshire with two, North Lanarkshire, Highland and West Lothian Council took first place in the five main categories of the awards. Best Team award went to Renfrewshire Council, their third success of the evening, the chair's award went to West Dunbartonshire Council and North Lanarkshire scooped a second prize of the evening by winning the Leadership Award.

Cosla president Pat Watters, who chaired the judging panel, described the entries for the awards as exceptional.

'The Cosla Excellence Awards have been established for a good number of years now and the standard of entries continues to get better and better.

'Scotland's councils demonstrate year after year that they are providing first class, exceptionally high quality services which benefit the whole community the length and breadth of Scotland.

'I, as Cosla president, am extremely pleased that we, as an organisation, recognise such excellence.'

Mr Watters concluded: 'What is also pleasing is that year on year we are seeing even more innovative and exciting projects designed to meet specific needs. This proves that local government does not just deliver the everyday services that we all take for granted but that it provides imaginative solutions to complex situations throughout the year.'

The Cosla Excellence Awards 2002 are sponsored by: ScottishPower, Xerox and the Scottish Executive.

This year the awards attracted 136 entries from councils throughout Scotland in five categories.
