A think tank has claimed that the high number of young black pupils being excluded from school was one of the prime causes behind last year's Brixton riot, reported The Guardian (June 15, p10).

The paper said that according to Lambeth LBC, Afro-Caribbean boys in the area are three times as likely to be excluded from school as whites.

Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Runnymede Trust, says in a report due out this week that there is a generation of young black men growing up in Brixton who believe that it does not matter what they do, they will still be condemned.
