Newcastle City Council deputy leader John O'Shea has resigned following talks with regional Labour party officials.

The Journal reports (p2) that they had asked him to stand down in the face of 'very serious allegations' regarding claims lodged in his capacity as a city magistrate.

Cllr O'Shea denies the allegations against him and vows to clear his name.
