The Edinburgh International Festival has been awarded a supplementary grant of£100,000 in recognition of its 50th anniversary, the Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth has announced.
Commenting on the award, Mr Forsyth said: 'I am delighted to be able to announce today a supplementary grant of£100,000 for the Edinburgh International Festival.
In the fifty years of its existence the Festival has brought thousands of outstanding artists to Edinburgh and provided a magnificent focus, not only for the artistic life of Scotland, but for tourism and economic development as well.
'Last year's Festival was an outstanding success in both artistic and commercial terms. I very much hope the 1997 Festival will be just as successful and the extra funding which I am announcing today should help to achieve this.'
