Social services directors in port and airport areas and in London have warned they will have to raid their community care budgets because of the cost of supporting asylum seekers, reports The Guardian (p15).

Unless extra funds are forthcoming, they may have to halt arrangements for discharging elderly people from hospital.

Bob Lewis, president elect of the Association of Directors of Social Services said the councils had no choice but to give priority to people 'who might otherwise starve on the street', the paper reports.
