A council officer has been charged by police in connection with the alleged theft of council funds.

Diane Vallance, 40, a council tax supervisor with Fareham BC in Hampshire, was charged last week with four counts of theft and four of false accounting.

Police said the amount of money alleged to have been stolen was approximately £10,000.A spokesman for the council said that an internal probe had led the council to call in the police.

As a result of the routine investigation, discrepancies were discovered in the national rates, community charge and council tax accounts and police were called in. Mrs Vallance has been bailed to appear before Fareham Magistrates on 29 October.
