Fire destroys Leicestershire district council offices

  • Comment
Investigators are sifting through the burnt-out wreckage of a Leicestershire council’s offices after fire ripped through the building.

Melton BC's headquarters caught fire on Friday morning and a raft of services remain suspended with staff working from emergency locations.

Experts are examining whether the building on Nottingham Road, in Melton Mowbray, could be saved after extensive fire and water damage.

In a statement the council said there had been a “serious fire”. It added: “We have received confirmation from the fire service that the fire is out and the site has been returned to the council. The site is secure, patrolled and access is restricted.

Around thirty staff are working out of emergency building the Phoenix Centre in Nottingham while other staff are answering calls from a tourist centre in King Street, Melton Mowbray.

“We are still investigating the causes of the fire,” said Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service.
