The second-ever national strike of the UK's fire service looms closer as fire fighters support a move to ballot for a series of discontinuous strikes in support of their£30,000 pay claim.

Ballot papers will be sent out to the 52,000 members of the Fire Brigades Union on 27 September.

The ballot result will be announced three weeks later.

The FBU's claim is for 39% increase in the starting salary and an overhaul of the pay formula.

The FBU rejected the employers' offer of an interim 4% increase, pending the recommendations of the independent review commissioned by the government (LGC, 6 September). The FBU has refused to be drawn into the review.
