BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported from Sheffield on preparations in

the city for the firefighters' strike.

The city council is calling on residents and businesses to be more aware of

fire risks, said councillor Paul Scriven, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrat

group.

'We have to turn to the citizens and say be a little bit more vigilant than

you normally would. Maybe look at postponing your bonfire and firework

displays'.

Football grounds and other venues are having to apply for a new fire safety

certificate in the light of changed circumstances if the strike goes ahead,

Today reported.
