Firefighters have voted by three to one to accept the staged 7% pay increase, bringing to an end the unofficial action by fire stations opposed to phasing of the deal.

Fire Brigades Union general secretary Andy Gilchrist said staggering the pay increase was 'an industrial relations disaster'. But an LGA spokeswoman said the agreement clearly stated the deal would be phased.

Firefighters received the first 3.5% in November and are due to receive the second installment in July.
