The firefighters union, the FBU, has called for an urgent meeting with new home secretary Jack Straw over its dispute with Essex CC reported the Financial Times (May 3, p6).

The dispute is likely to be an early test of Tony Blair's declared policy of 'fairness not favours' for trade unions, said the paper.

The union said: 'The result of the general election does not appear to mean a change in the funding of local government and this does not bode well for the future of the fire service.'
