Essex firefighters have called for talks with the county council as Fire Brigades Union members began their seventh strike over£1.5 million spending cuts.

Essex FBU secretary Keith Handscomb said the union had not met formally with the council since the new administration took office.

Informally, the council said it will not sit down to talks until the union suspends the strike.

'We will consider their request if the council is prepared to talk about staffing issues,' Mr Handscomb said. 'In the meantime we are looking for talks with no strings.'

As LGC went to press, four more strikes were in the pipeline.
