The Fire Brigades Union is threatening a national strike over what they claim are attempts to dilute conditions of service by devolving everything bar pay and basic hours to local negotiations.

The Herald (p3) reports that FBU officials, who believe these moves would lead to reduced fire cover and undermine the unity of the union by pitting firefighter against firefighter, yesterday told the employers that any unilateral action to alter conditions of service would result in an immediate national strike ballot being called.

The 50,000-strong FBU sees the employers' proposed moves as the thin end of the wedge likely to lead to the ending of the 22-year-old national pay formula which has ensured there has been no repetition of the 1977 national pay dispute that its introduction resolved.
