Essex CC has decided to freeze the recruitment of firefighters for a year to help find £1m towards a budget gap of £29m, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p9).

Meanwhile The Birmingham Post reports (p3) that after hearing from a lobby of 70 firefighters, Warwickshire councillors yesterday agreed to loan its fire service £963,000 to help keep two stations and 20 jobs that were under threat because of funding cuts.

The Post reports that Warwickshire's policy and resources committee agreed to recommend an overall budget to a council meeting on 27 February that will lead to a 5.5% rise in the county component of the council tax bill.

Other cutbacks agreed by the Essex CC yesterday include £2.66m from the highways committee - mainly out of the special maintenance programme for footpaths and carriageways.
