A plane took 151 Kosovan refugees back to the Balkans yesterday, the first to return since the conflict ended in their homeland, reports The Guardian (p6).

The refugees, some of the 4,500 who sought safety in the UK, were set to board coaches in Macedonia for the final stage of the journey back to their battered towns and villages.

The refugees have lived in Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Liverpool and London. Some staged an 'ecstatic and very emotional' party on the eve of their flight.

'Many are absolutely desparate to get home,' said Nick Hardwick, chief executive of the Refugee Council. 'They want to get back to their loved ones and start rebuilding their lives as soon as possible.'
