Public health has been recognised as a priority by new prime minister Tony Blair, with a new appointment of public health minister for Tessa Jowell, minister of state at the department of health.

Reported in the Independent (p5), one of the first ministerial responsibilities will be to ban tobacco advertising.

There will be no separate minister for women, but social security secretary Harriet Harman adds the duty to her portfolio.
