The Rt Hon Ian Lang MP, Secretary of State for Scotland, has approved proposals by the School Board of Dornoch Academy in Sutherland to acquire self-governing status.
The announcement of his decision was made by Lord James Douglas-Hamilton MP, Minister for Education at The Scottish Office, in a keynote address to a conference on self-governing status held at the King James Hotel, Edinburgh on Saturday 25 September .
Welcoming the announcement, Lord James said: 'I am delighted that Dornoch Academy will now become the first self-governing school in Scotland. This is a most important landmark. I am sure that the commitment which has been shown by the School Board and the very strong parental support which the Board has received will stand it in good stead in the future. I wish the school well in this exciting new venture.
