Global warming is making Britain a flood 'hotspot', the Environment Agency has warned.

Marking its Flood Action Week campaign, the agency said floods had killed 25 people and devastated thousands of homes and businesses over the past two years. Scientists have predicted a 10-fold increase in flood risk over the next century.

The agency has launched new flood warning codes using traffic-light style warnings.

The action week is intended to raise awareness of how homes and people can be protected from floods by reacting to warnings.

Agency chairman Sir John Harman said: 'As potential flooding looms, people need to know precisely what warnings mean.'
