Overnight tests carried out in connection with an investigation into

a pig slaughtered yesterday at an abattoir in Leicestershire have

shown initial negative results for FMD and swine vesicular disease.

Movement restrictions imposed yesterday will remain in place as

further tests are done.

Work to trace the pig's source premises continues. Vets have visited

and cleared 12 premises and will visit a further 22 during the course

of today, in North Yorkshire, Humberside, East Riding of Yorkshire

and South Yorkshire. Selby Market remains under restriction.

1) The samples are being analysed at the Institute for Animal Health

in Pirbright, Surrey.

2) Definitive laboratory results should be available early next week.

3) Interim contingency plans drawn up with stakeholders following the

2001 outbreak are available on the DEFRA website.
