Hertsmere BC is backing a scheme to ease housing shortages by offering council tenants the chance to retire to Spain, reports the Mirror (p1) and Today (p16).

Ridgehill Housing Association will build two bedroom apartments on the Costa Blanca with funds from the Nationwide Building Society to free-up former council homes it manages in Herts.

Tenants, who must not be claiming housing benefit or income support, will be able to move back to England after three years if they are not happy, the papers report.
