A group of former county boroughs have formed an association to press for unitary status after being disappointed by the local government review.

The Former County Boroughs Group is part of the Association of District Councils and includes districts such as Gloucester, Blackpool, Lincoln, Norwich and Oxford.

FCBG says all the towns in the association have a strong local identity, a municipal civic tradition and proven competence and strength.

The group says that the Local Government Commission has been overly cautious in denying many of the old county boroughs the opportunity offered by the review and that the government should overturn this view and give the county boroughs the right to run themselves.
