The former leader of the Vale of Glamorgan CBC, who is under police investigation for alleged fraud, has for the first time since the investigation began spoken to the press in detail about the issue.

The Western Mail (p5) reports that Shaun Stringer, who resigned as leader of the council when the inquiries began earlier this year, accused the Labour party hierarchy of mounting a 'witch-hunt' against him to prevent him from having any chance of standing for next May's council or Welsh assembly elections.

Stressing his innocence of any wrongdoing, the former council leader said: 'Every council leader in the country will be in trouble if I am charged with criminal offences.' He believes there are personal and political motives behind the accusations.

He also claimed there was now a political vacuum at the council with a major financial crisis in the direct services organisation.
