A former council employee who defrauded a London borough of£25,000 in housing benefit has been sentenced to 200 hours community service.

Marilyn Barzey, who lost her job as a social worker at Ealing LBC when the fraud was discovered in routine checks last year, provided false information to benefit officers for four years. Resources committee chair Philip Portwood said: 'We will take action against anyone who steals from the public purse.'
