The use of data matching to stamp out fraud needs to balance protecting the public purse and respecting the individual's right to privacy, according to the Public Audit Forum.

A consultation paper from the forum, which includes the National Audit Office and the local government audit bodies, warns councils and their auditors must comply with privacy legislation enshrined in the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Human Rights Act 1998.

Data matching and the role of public sector auditors is available at www.public-audit-forum.gov.uk.
