Four current and former senior council officers have been charged as part of a long running police inquiry into alleged housing grant fraud, reports The Western Mail (p6).

The four, who were all senior officers in Radnorshire DC's housing department, have each been charged with defrauding the Welsh Office and misconduct in public office.

Stephen Clinton and David Rowlands transferred to the new Powys unitary authority, and it is believed they are currently suspended from work, the Mail reports. Lance Cartwright and Dennis Bowers retired earlier this year.

The police inquiry started in May 1995, and a number of former Radnorshire officials and local builders have been questioned.
