North Tyneside MBC has approved a £1.4m severance payment to more than 300 staff who took voluntary redundancy in 1990, reports The Chronicle (p3).

A four-year controversy over the lump sum pay-offs sparked a legal battle when the council demanded the money be paid back. However, a new government ruling has forced the council to drop the action, the paper says.
