Rotherham MBC is planning an awareness campaign to try and increase the uptake of free school meals after research showed one in five eligible pupils failed to claim them.

The Yorkshire Post (p6) reports that low income families are missing out on£200 of free school meals a year for the sake of filling in a form.

Council officers says they are baffled why the free meals are not being eaten.

Principal benefits administrator Brian Robinson said: 'It's almost like refusing a blank cheque. All the families have to do is complete a simple application form to save£200 a year.'
