City councils should be allowed to go ahead with tram schemes with private sector partners, Labour's transport spokeswoman Joan Walley told the annual international light rail conference in Sheffield yesterday, the Yorkshire Post reports (p5).

Ms Walley called on the government to lift the restrictions on transport supplementary grants so that councils such as Leeds can go ahead with their tram schemes.

Leeds City Council and the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority meet transport minister Steven Norris tomorrow to ask for funding for the city's £95m Supertram scheme, the paper reports.
