French prime minister Edouard Balladur told members of the Committee of the Regions that they were going to play a growing role in the institutions of Europe.

Speaking at the close of the CoR's anniversary celebrations in Montpellier, Mr Balladur joined calls for the committee to actively participate in the debate on institutional reform.

Any revision of the treaty on European Union should take into account the responsibilities of all levels of government, The union itself, the member states, the regions and local authorities.

'A solution involving the regions could be complementary to that involving the national parliaments,' said Mr Balladur.

'However, in any case we must ensure that decision are taken by those who are most concerned.'
