Merchant bank Kleinwort Benson is organising a scheme where councils could raise up to £500m by selling off the 5,000-plus farms still in local authority ownership, reported the Observer (p8).
The scheme, to be launched in April as part of the government's Rural White Paper proposals, involves requiring councils to set aside privatisation proceeds for spending on improving life in declining rural communities.
